We have awarded £182,543 to heritage projects across Scotland as part of the Historic Environment Support Fund.
The funding ranges from over £80,000 for traditional skills training to £15,000 to repair a historic loom, plus smaller grants to support workshops and conferences. The recipients are spread across Scotland from the Outer Hebrides and Moray to the Scottish Borders and East Lothian.

Whether it’s engaging the local community with Scotland’s built environment, keeping traditional skills alive through training, or preserving the roof of a historic building, these heritage projects helps ensure that our historic environment is looked after, protected and managed for the generations to come."
The Historic Environment Support Fund is used to support various one-off, heritage-related projects in Scotland. The applications are open throughout the year and are considered in three batches. The next closing date is 30 November 2019.
Recipients:
The Ridge Foundations, Dunbar
£81,480 to provide training on traditional skills, creating a highly skilled local workforce to work on the restoration and maintenance of local structures of historic importance.
GalGael Trust, Glasgow
£32,329 support GalGael Trust offer people the chance to learn basic practical woodwork skills and offer taster sessions in a range of traditional building skills
Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust, Perth
£20,000 to provide academically disengaged schoolchildren, disadvantaged people and adults within the criminal justice system traditional building skills and inspire them to consider it as a future vocation
Gatliff Hebridean Hostels Trust, Berneray, North Uist
£18,525 to support Gatliff Hebridean Hotels Trust with its project to reconstruct the roof of the Berneray Hostel with traditional materials, including turf and locally sourced marram thatch, to ensure the buildings have a traditional Hebridean appearance.
Knockando Woolmill Trust, Moray
£15,000 to restore its historic loom. This is the final piece of work required to fully restore the Victorian machinery and follows an extensive 12-year restoration project undertaken by the Trust.
The Institute of Conservation Scotland, Tranent
£4,261 to the Institute of Conservation Scotland Group to provide specialist training and up-skilling to professional conservators and traditional skills practitioners in the conservation of objects and collections.
Civic Room, Glasgow
£4,000 to Civic Room to support a legacy publication and two engagement events which explore the history of female architects in Scotland and the crossover between design and craft within Glasgow’s built environment.
Falkirk Council, Falkirk
£3,500 for Falkirk Council’s project on the story of the Carron Company. The project will engage with the local community to raise awareness of the history and evolution of Carron Works and encourage people to help them tell it story, and repair, conserve and interpret the industrial icon’s surviving heritage features.
Scottish Council on Archives, Edinburgh
£2,920 for a workshop on preserving Scotland's archival collections for future generations.
Leadhills Heritage Trust, Scottish Borders
£528 towards costs for its conference on lead mining history and archaeology.
